During the lockdown, I’ve been working on some creative projects not using a screen. This includes making photographs using film, manual processing and darkroom printing. It feel completely labourious and rewarding at the same time.

Of course, astronomers made photographs of the stars using film before the invention of digital photography. As early as the 1870s, scientists William and Mary Huggins were using dry plate photography to create spectrographs of starlight. In 1883, Andrew Ainslie Common photographed the Orion Nebula, the first photograph to show stars too faint to be seen by the human eye.

“The recovery must also respect the rights of future generations, enhancing climate action aiming at carbon neutrality by 2050 and protecting biodiversity,” said Guterres.

‘Expert Twitter’ Only Goes So Far. Bring Back Blogs

Here’s a Wired article on the shortcomings of Twitter for communicating the knowledge of experts. Twitter has a enormous reach and ideas and information can spread quickly using its mechanism of retweets and likes, but of course so too can misinformation spread.

Over time, Twitter has added features to allow for longer form writing, like threaded tweets, but this feature existings because Twitter wants writers to stay on their platform, rather than write elsewhere. Threaded tweets are a odd solution to a non-problem because publishing tools like blogging software provide a much better platform for long form writing.
