It’s the 30th Anniversary of the launch of the Hubble Space Telescope. This is the optical telescope in orbit around planet, which - free of the Earth’s atmosphere - is able to image our galaxy and beyond in incredible detail.
For me, the most profound images it has produced are the ‘deep field’ images. The 2020 ’eXtreme Deep Field’ image used 10 years worth of exposures of a small patch of sky (small being about the size of a pin head viewed at arms length, or one thirty-two millionth of the sky), and within this tiny patch of sky astronomers counted 5500 galaxies, each galaxy containing billions of stars.
Scale that pin-sized area of the sky up 32 million times and that gives us a figure of nearly 200 billion galaxies in the observable universe, and that’s at the lower end of the estimates.

For the UK government’s NHSX contact tracing app to be effective, everyone with a smartphone will need to use it. But without transparency on the way it works and who has access to the data, the app raises major privacy concerns.
With Palentir’s Peter Thiel (Trump Donor and major investor in Facebook) on board with the development programme, data privacy groups are raising questions about who will be the main benificiary of the massive amount of data that will be captured.
Other countries took a sensible approach to contact tracing early on in the outbreak, without the need for mass surveillance. It seems that the population of the UK and US are paying the price for our Governments’ slow response to the outbreak, and will be subject to big-data companies who could see this as a massive data-mining opportunity.
