Preventing Comment Spam

The major Search Engines together with Weblog tool developers have developed a simple way of deterring comment spammers. Simply by adding the attribute rel=”nofollow” will stop Search Engine Bots from following the link, thus denying spammers the PageRank gained from being linked. The Google Weblog has an entry with more information about it.

Nice… but is blog spam not propagated by agents installed on random, unprotected Windows users\’ PCs rather than actual people? If so, the person at the IP address in question wouldn\’t even realise they\’d spammed you.

P.S. I\’m definitely with you on the geek/nerd thing. :)

Mal, you\’re right. I\’m failing to make the distinction between automated spam and the spam you get from abusive commenters. This was a string of 4 or 5 messages in short succession and the content was clearly of human origin (they suggested that I and the fellow posters in the thread go back to playing Dungeons & Dragons!… really :)

Alas, it seems I have no defence from automated spam :( Thankfully I haven’t seen any here yet.
