Hmmmm… just like the FireFox icon, it\’s *beautiful* at higher resolutions, but at 32×32 and below, I\’d never guess what it was. Quite a few people responding to the article mentioned that too. On a Windows PC, this makes it pretty much worthless, as you very rarely see higher res than 32×32. Is it different on OS-X? Are large icons the norm there?

I agree Mal. While it\’s very nice to look at – like the Firefox icon – I\’m not sure it\’s 100% successful as an icon.

OS X supports icons up to 128×128. So yes, nicely rendered icons like this are common on OS X. Although just because designers _can_ design for 128×128 doesn\’t mean they should as it results in icons that, as demonstrated here, look pretty meaningless at smaller sizes.

That said, Hicks\’ work is getting people talking about and using Firebird and Thunderbird and I think that\’s a very good thing.

Actually, I\’ve probably done him a disservice. I just noticed reply 146, from Jon Hicks himself, stating that the lower-res icons have yet to be tweaked. They\’re just scaled versions of the large one at the mo. Guess I\’d better reserve judgement until they\’re all complete. :)
