British Blog Awards

The Guardian have announced the winners of this year’s British Blog Awards. The majority of the winning entries I’ve never come across before, which is probably a good thing if it’s going to promote lesser known weblogs to a wider audience. I’d agree that The Big Smoker is a well designed blog although its design and content have been heavily influenced by Gothamist. There’s nothing wrong with that, although I’d expect more originality from a site that’s won an award for its design.

“[I]ts design and content have been heavily influenced by Gothamist.” I’ll say! Even down to the Panda lovin’. Egads, that’s not the slightest bit original…

I thought the photography on Apparently Nothing was excellent, though I felt a bit sorry for Camerantics, who unfortunately exceeded their bandwidth limit on the day they got nominated for the awards. Doh!

Besides, although I’d admit that it’s all about taste, I don’t particularly like that Big Smoker design. I would agree it’s neat and decent, but it’s far from original – in the meaning of different from others, the other has been mentioned already.

Who said _The Guardian_ were experts on what makes a great blog? It’s totally subjective. ;)
