PRESS RELEASE freespeling.com WORLD VOTE IMMEDIATE

Freespeling.com – the campaign to modernize English spelling – announces the launch of a major World Vote to elect 500 easier simpler spellings.

English is one of the most difficult European languages to learn to read and write, yet it has become the international language of business, travel, diplomacy and the internet. Much of its spelling was set in concrete by Dr Samuel Johnson?s dictionary in 1755. http://www.freespeling.com was founded 3 years ago to help bring the way we write English up to date.

The most articulate and literate people have sometimes been the most dismissive of reform and raised barriers to changes which might help millions achieve greater literacy or better access to what is now the world language. However, the innovation of text messaging and the informality of emails have already begun to alter the apparently rigid attitudes of many who teach or just use this rich and wonderful language. Over the last two years, three trial World Votes on http://www.freespeling.com to ?elect? easier alternatives have suggested that such ?freespelings? can co-exist with current Standard Spellings and may then supersede them if adopted into common use.

    http://www.freespeling.com has two prongs:
    1. FIRST
You are encouraged to freespel those words you find particularly difficult BUT to write for the cumfert of your reader (Dont litter the page with unconventional spelings ? treat freedom gently!)

    2. SECOND.
The World Vote aims to build an international consensus on easier simpler spellings to coexist. There are no Top Down new Rules, no obligatory Reform.

The ?freespeling500file? World Vote at http://www.freespeling.com invites anyone, anywhere with an online computer to vote for alternatives to 500 difficult, illogical (and some easy) words and so to choose simpler freespelings from the choices on offer or you can type in your own suggestion. Once registered you can vote for part of the ?freespeling500file?, log off and then return to finish voting when convenient

Voting starts NOW and will finish in October 2005. The 500 elected freespelings will be published at the end of 2005 to celebrate the 250th anniversary of Dr Johnson?s great dictionary. GO to http://www.freespeling.com NOW
